Looking for a keto fireball recipe? This homemade fireball whiskey recipe is my go-to when I’m craving fireball without all the carbs.

Does Fireball have carbs?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you’re eating keto or trying to stick to a low carb diet, a traditional Fireball shot is off-limits. While unflavored whiskey has no carbs, Fireball has over 10 grams of carbs per shot. Unless you plan to have just one shot and severely limit your carbs for the rest of the day, regular Fireball won’t fit into a keto diet.

Luckily, making your own keto Fireball whiskey is simple, and it lets you enjoy the cinnamon whiskey flavor without all that sugar.

My Love of Fireball

Fireball has always been my go-to alcohol for special occasions or winding down after a rough day. While I’ve since developed better stress management techniques and make self-care a priority, there were times when a bottle of Fireball stopped me from reaching my breaking point.

It’s been a part of my Christmas Eve tradition for years. After baking gingerbread men with the kids and letting them open their Christmas Eve presents, I’d finally get some quiet time. That’s when I’d pour myself a Fireball and watch my favorite Christmas movie — Adam Sandler’s Eight Crazy Nights.

When I started keto, I wasn’t ready to give up that tradition. Luckily, I had already experimented with keto alcohol recipes and perfected my homemade Fireball whiskey recipe in time for Christmas. Is Fireball keto friendly?

Whiskey

While Fireball is the most popular cinnamon whiskey, it isn’t the only option. Jack Daniels makes Tennessee Fire, which I discovered at a food and wine show years ago. Honestly, I liked it more than Fireball and returned to that booth five times!

For my recipe, I usually use Jack Daniels. I’ve made it with cheaper whiskey too, and it turns out fine, but the flavor is richer with JD.

Cinnamon Flavor

Flavoring the whiskey with cinnamon sticks is easy but requires planning ahead. The longer the sticks soak, the stronger the flavor.

Sweetener

Most recipes for homemade Fireball whiskey use sugar-based simple syrup. To keep it keto, I swap in liquid stevia. I usually taste as I go, but about 1 tablespoon per 750ml bottle works perfectly

The process for making your own sugar free Fireball whiskey is simple.

Drop 4 cinnamon sticks into a 750ml bottle of whiskey, shake, and let it soak for at least 5 days. Keep it in the fridge or at room temperature—either works. If you’re storing it longer than a couple of weeks, strain out the cinnamon sticks.

Add in a tablespoon of liquid stevia (or 20 packets of stevia, dissolved in 1 cup of water) before you’re ready to serve.

If you’re looking for a quicker process, some alternative flavoring options are cinnamon essential oil (use an ingestible brand, about 30 drops will give it a strong enough flavor), which works but can be pricey. Another option I haven’t tried yet is some cinnamon flavored syrup (if you try it let me know how it works out).

Mixing & Serving

Cinnamon whiskey is versatile—you can drink it mixed, as a shot, or on ice.

Before keto, I mixed it with Pepsi, but now I use Zevia Cola. The combination tastes similar to Dr. Pepper. I’ve also tried Zevia Cream Soda, inspired by a cinnamon roll cocktail I saw online, and it’s delicious.

Is It as Good as Fireball?

I’ll be honest, it’s not quite the same as Fireball (or Tennessee Fire). You really can’t take the sugar out of something like that and expect the same taste.  It’s a bit of an adjustment to get used to the taste of things sweetened with stevia too.

If you’re new to keto, you might want to try other low-carb alcohol drinks first (like these keto coolers) and save this for later. But if you’re like me, and have adjusted to eating and drinking things that aren’t overly sweet, it satisfies your cinnamon whiskey cravings and is enjoyable straight or mixed.

  1. Oh thank you so much for this. I love Fireball and can drink it every night. But since I found out how many carbs are in one shot, I tried to switch to spiced rum. So not the same thing. But I’m giving you recipe a shot (literally) and thanks again.

  2. Have you ever tried to make it with granulated monkfruit? To me it’s so much better than stevia. If you have did you dissolve it beforehand and how much did you use?

    1. I have not tried it with monk fruit, but it should work if you make a simple syrup with it by dissolving ¼ cup of monk fruit in 1 cup of boiling water.

        1. Yes, I have made it with cheaper whiskey too, and it turns out fine. I like to drink it straight with some ice, but it is also good mixed with some cola or cream soda.

  3. Have you tried Jim Beam Fire? Sources say it has zero carbs, but I’m not sure I believe it because it tastes so goo.

    1. I just checked their website and it isn’t listed in the nutrition information section. There are a couple of other flavored bourbons listed, like Apple with 5.2 g of carbs and Red Stag with 5.9. I have emailed them to ask about the carbs in the Fire, and will update once I hear back from them.

  4. I love Fireball so I’m gonna give this recipe a try. I mix mine in unsweetened ice tea….. so refreshing and not so sweet like with soda. I’ll also drink it with water…. gotta pace myself LoL
