This simple keto taco dip is quick to make and a perfect keto appetizer for celebrations or just an everyday keto snack. The basic recipe only has 4 simple ingredients, but there are other optional ingredients and toppings you can add if you prefer.
While regular tortilla chips aren’t keto-friendly, it’s easy to find a keto tortilla chip substitute too.
Last year I wrote about the Christmas tradition The Husband and I started years ago, of drinking Fireball on Christmas Eve while watching Adam Sandler’s “Eight Crazy Nights”. Since I had already come up with a keto Fireball recipe, there was no issue continuing our tradition with me being on keto last year.
What I forgot about, until the day before Christmas Eve, was that I also usually made us a taco dip with tortilla chips to snack on while we watched the movie.
Luckily, my taco dip recipe was already keto-friendly, so I didn’t have to go searching for a new keto dip recipe.
I just needed to find a keto tortilla chip substitute.
Keto Tortilla Chip Substitute Ideas
Almond Flour Tortilla Chips
If you don’t mind spending the time doing the baking, you can make your own keto tortilla chips using almond flour.
Baked Tortilla’s
If you’re looking for something simpler than baking tortilla chips from scratch, you can cut up and bake a low carb tortilla, like Mission Carb Balance which only had 3 grams of net carbs per tortilla.
Quest Protein Chips
If you don’t want to do any baking at all, there are store-bought keto tortilla chips options too.
These Quest Protein Chips are probably the lowest carb store-bought keto tortilla chips you will find, with only 4 grams of net carbs per bag. Unfortunately, they don’t have unflavored ones, but the loaded taco chips would pair well with keto taco dip.
Whisps
You could also try eating your keto taco dip with cheese chips like Whisps, with only 1 gram of carbs per 23 chips.
Pork rinds
If you are looking for a no-carb tortilla chip substitute, pork rinds are a great 0 carb crunchy chip alternative.
Vegetables
But the healthiest option is vegetables. Peppers, cucumbers, radishes, and celery all work well for dipping.
Last year I just went with celery, since it seemed like the easiest vegetable to scoop up the dip. This year, I am going to try it with peppers and cucumbers too.
Basic Keto Taco Dip Ingredients
I like to keep my recipes simple and quick.
While I could make a keto version of a fancy 7-layer taco dip with ground beef and guacamole that needs to be baked, my easy cold taco dip only has 4 main ingredients and can be made in under 5 minutes.
It also doesn’t need to be served as a “layered taco dip”.
Instead, I stir all the ingredients together and add a layer of cheese on top.
Greek Yogurt
While most classic taco dip recipes use sour cream or mayonnaise (or both), I prefer to use Greek yogurt.
Yes, I know, you can eat sour cream on keto. I know, it’s higher in fat than Greek yogurt too. But Greek yogurt has almost the same amount of carbs in it, and it has live bacterial cultures in it that most sour creams are lacking, so it’s better for your gut.
Whipped Cream Cheese
Most keto taco dips involve mixing sour cream with cream cheese with a hand mixer. I skip this step by using whipped cream cheese instead. It mixes much better with the Greek yogurt (or sour cream if you prefer that), so it saves me some time.
If you do have to use regular cream cheese, make sure you take it out of the fridge to get it at room temperature before you mix it or you will end up with chunks of cream cheese in your dip.
Salsa
Unlike most keto taco dip recipes, I use salsa instead of taco seasoning.
Is salsa ok on keto?
While salsa can be a bit high in carbs if you are eating it on its own, it only adds 1.5 grams of net carbs per serving in my keto taco dip. Just make sure the brand you are using doesn’t have any added sugars.
If you do opt to use taco seasoning instead, mix it in with the yogurt/cream cheese mixture.
Shredded Cheese
I like to add a lot of cheese to my dip, so I mix one cup in with the other ingredients and add another cup on top. If you don’t like yours as cheesy you can make yours with half of that.
Optional Ingredients
If you would prefer to make a keto layered taco dip (or just want to add more to your dip), here are a few other ingredients you can add that are keto-friendly.
Ground Beef
I personally prefer my keto taco dip without meat (plus I don’t want to add the time it would take to cook the meat). But if you prefer a taco dip with meat, you can add ground beef as another layer.
Keto Versions Of “Refried Beans”
Most ingredients in classic taco dips are keto-friendly, but many of them include something that is not.
Beans.
I personally never put beans in my taco dip anyway, but if that’s something you really want to include in yours you can easily find recipes for zucchini or cauliflower-based “refried beans”.
Mashed Avocado/Guacamole
Another ingredient that is often added to keto taco dips is guacamole or even just mashed avocados.
While avocado is a keto-friendly food (and a good healthy fat to add), I don’t really like them. While I do eat them occasionally in things that I can’t taste them in, I have not tried adding them to this keto taco dip to see if the rest of the ingredients would hide the flavor yet.
Optional Toppings
If you are using vegetables as your keto tortilla chip substitute, you won’t really need to add any vegetable toppings to the taco dip.
But, if you have opted for another keto chip alternative, you can add any of the following to make this keto taco dip more nutritious.
- Peppers
- Lettuce
- Tomatoes
- Green Onions

I will be sticking to just using the basic keto taco dips ingredients again this year, though I may stir in some green onions too.
Since I am doing the keto reset diet now, and don’t have to count any non-starchy vegetables in my carbs, I will be using celery again and some cucumbers and peppers as my keto tortilla chip substitute.
And, of course, I will enjoy it with some of my homemade keto fireball.
What keto tortilla chip substitute do you use for taco dip? If you add any of the optional ingredients to the keto taco dip let me know how it turns out.
