There are so many options for kids Advent calendars, it’s hard to decide which is the best Advent calendar for 2019.
As a kid, I always looked forward to my chocolate countdown calendar. So, of course, this was a tradition I continued with my kids as soon as they were old enough to eat chocolate.
Admittedly, I also continued to buy one for myself every year too.
But last year, chocolate calendars were not an option since we had made some healthy changes to our diets and I was doing the keto diet.
While I could have just bought chocolate calendars, dumped the chocolate out, and replaced it with our own healthy chocolate (something I have done for Big Sis for years, since she couldn’t have dairy), I opted to skip on the chocolate all together.
Instead I splurged and bought the kids each a toy Advent calendar.
Big Sis loved her Hatchimal Advent calendar and Lil Sis got the 2018 Lego Friends one. The Husband and I didn’t have to miss out on this tradition either, since we each got lottery ticket countdown calendars.
But this year, I don’t want to just grab whatever I can find at Walmart. I wanted to see what other options there were.
What I found was that there are so many more kids Advent calendars than I had realized. Seriously, every toy company out there seems to have joined the Christmas countdown calendar market.
Now, with so many options, how do I decide which one my kids will like best?

An Advent calendar is a special calendar used to count the days until Christmas.
While many of the Advent calendars available to purchase involve toys, candy or other objects being placed behind a door or into a drawer, not all of them involve getting a gift every day.
The simpler versions like this felt reusable Advent calendar just have a piece that is moved from one day to the next to count the days until Christmas.

Advent is the period of weeks starting four Sundays before Christmas. While this means the period of Advent actually starts anywhere between November 27th to December 3rd, Advent calendars typically just start on December 1st.

While this is how I have always done it, counting down, so you know how many days there are until Christmas, sounds like a good idea too.

The better question is, how long have these toys advent calendars been around for? I don’t know about you, but I don’t remember them being in stores when I was a kid.

Advent calendars have become increasingly popular and can now be purchased with just about any food or item, so the possibilities of what to put into a DIY Advent calendar are endless.

The popularity of Advent calendars hasn’t been limited to just ones aimed at children. Advent calendars for grown-ups have become more popular lately too. You can even get alcohol, beer or wine calendars.
Beauty Advent calendars have become pretty trendy, with brands like MAC, Kiehl’s, and Sephora releasing their own calendars.
In 2019 food Advent calendars aren’t limited to just chocolate anymore either. Now you can get ones filled with things like Fruit Spreads and hot sauce too.
While I used to buy myself the Lindt chocolate calendars, since we started eating healthy, I have been looking for other adult options. While I’m still hoping to find one with mini wine bottles this year (which don’t seem to be available in Ontario yet), if I can’t I will settle for a lottery ticket one again.
